Know Your Farmers - North 44 Farm

Updated: Feb 22

It is no secret that we love supporting our local farmers and ranchers, this is the core of The Barn in Sisters philosophy. We want to create partnerships with the people and the land so that we can curate the best possible environment in our restaurant for our customers. In today's day and age it's important to know where our food is coming from, not only because we want to buy from our local community, but because we want to provide you with the best tasting and most nutritious foods that we can.

We strive to serve the very best to our customers and we really do that by providing you all with our 100% grass-fed & pastured raised beef burgers from North 44 Farm. These burgers are available for dinner service seven nights a week from The Barn Kitchen.

North 44 Farm is known for producing high-quality grass-fed and finished beef and lamb, which we are so happy to be able to bring to our customers. North 44 Farm is run by Courtney Schuur and Ethan O’Brien. They are first generation farmers who have been working to provide Central Oregon & beyond with the best quality beef and lamb since 2016. They center their farm around sustainable, regenerative, & humane farming practices, focusing on all the details from soil health to biodiverse pasture development.

As of August 2023, North 44 Farm is Certified Grass-Fed and Certified Animal Welfare Approved by the AGW. They chose to go through this certification process because it's the only label that guarantees animals are raised outdoors on pasture or range for their entire lives on an independent farm while the farmers are using sustainable, high-welfare farming practices. It is also the only label in the U.S. to require audited, high-welfare production, transport and slaughter practices, and has the single highest impact on consumer purchasing of any food label, according to The Hartman Group.

The cattle from North 44 Farm graze rotationally around a network of owned and leased parcels of land where they are free to graze on the available grasses and legumes. This intensive management allows the animals, the soil, and the pastures to become more resilient and thrive. North 44 Farm does not use any hormones at any stage of our animal's lifecycle. On occasion, they will make the choice to use antibiotics to treat a sick animal but that animal is then sold outside of their meat program.

When processing the meat, North 44 Farm works with a highly regarded USDA-inspected meat processing facility to bring you the best-finished product possible. Their beef is always dry-aged for no less than 14 days, and often closer to 28 days. This is a big difference from the supermarket standard of "wet-aged" meat. You can really taste the difference of dry aged, grass-fed and finished beef that is raised with care, hard work, and time.

The Barn in Sisters is ready to serve you one of our delicious burgers. Come see why we love North 44 Farms. Served everyday from 4 to 8 PM from our Barn Kitchen.
